SEVEN

AUGUST

The next morning, I stretched out on my bed. My eyes flicked open and memories of last night flooded my mind. The way Tess squirmed at my every touch, the way she sounded in her contentment. I loved it. I turned onto my side and there she was, curly hair a mess, sticking out in different directions. The bruises across her face and neck were turning ugly shades of green and purple, but to me, she was breathtaking. I could feel the latent mate-bond humming between us. It had only grown stronger. There were so many things that I needed to tell her—about myself, about the bond we shared, and what she could be. The very idea of that discussion terrified me.

Indulging my need to watch her for a few minutes longer, I finally convinced myself to get up and take a refreshing shower. Lying next to her like that only fed the mate-bond, which just fed my guilt. When I got out of the bathroom, she was still asleep, so I pulled on some clean clothes and headed into the kitchen to see what I could scrounge for breakfast. Damian had set me up in this apartment with the basics of what I’d need, but everything was just that—basics.

I found eggs, a loaf of bread, some milk, and not much else. It would have to do. Making a quick scramble, I dished it out onto plates, added toast and two glasses of milk, and headed back to the bedroom.

I found Tess sitting up looking only partly awake and staring around as if recalling where she was. “You're awake,” I said.

She twisted her head toward me. "August," she replied with a wide grin. “There you are.”

I couldn’t help the goofy grin I knew was spreading across my face. “Here I am.” I shifted the plates a little. “Breakfast?”

Tess sat up straighter and leaned back against the headboard of the bed, tucking the sheet up under her arms. “Starved. I would love some."

Bringing her a plate and taking the spot on the bed she’d left for me; I too settled back to eat. “Don’t expect much. This place came furnished and Damian left me food, but pickings were slim.”

“So great at dates but not so great at grocery shopping?” she teased.

"Yes. He was—" Her phone buzzing interrupted me, and I got it for her since I was closer to the nightstand.

Tess frowned at the message. "Crap," she mumbled. Her fingers typed the little keyboard frantically. She clicked send and shoved the phone under the pillow.

"Problem?"

"Heads up from Kelly. Sheriff Matthews was just at the bar doing a final interview with Dave. He mentioned you and that you rescued me. It won’t take him long to make his way here.” She sighed. “I’m so sorry for getting you involved in my mess.”

“You didn’t get me involved in anything. But if we are about to have a visitor, best finish eating and get dressed. You’ve mentioned you’ve had issues with the Sheriff before. Can you explain?”

Tess grabbed a piece of toast and nibbled on one edge as she made a face.
